The short answer
Most Sydney gyms are cleaned at standard commercial rates of around $46 to $70 an hour in 2026, including GST. What really sets your monthly bill is how many hours your gym needs each night, how many nights a week, and how many of those shifts fall on weekends.
A small studio might need an hour or so a few times a week. A busy 24 hour gym with showers can need two or three hours every night. Same hourly rate, very different monthly number.
What you’re paying for in a gym clean
A gym clean covers a lot more ground than an office clean, and most of it is high-touch.
- Wiping down equipment: benches, handles, bars, machines and mats
- Rubber and vinyl gym floors, cleaned with products that won’t damage them
- Change rooms and showers, including soap scum and mould
- Toilets, basins and restocking
- Mirrors, glass and studio walls
- Reception, the front entrance and bins
What pushes gym cleaning costs up
- Opening hours. A 24 hour gym has no empty window, so cleaning happens in the quietest hours, usually overnight.
- Weekend and public holiday shifts. Under the Cleaning Services Award, cleaners are paid 150% of the base rate on Saturdays, 200% on Sundays and 250% on public holidays. That cost flows into the price.
- Showers and change rooms. Wet areas take the most time, and they’re where members notice a bad clean first.
- Equipment density. More machines means more surfaces to wipe and more floor to work around.
- Frequency. Daily cleaning costs more per month than three visits a week, but busy gyms rarely get away with less.
- Floor types. Rubber, timber studio floors and carpet each need their own products and methods.
Rough budgets by gym type
| Gym type | Typical cleaning need | What drives the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Small studio (PT, yoga, boxing, F45 style) | 1 to 1.5 hours, 3 to 5 times a week | Studio floors, mirrors, one or two bathrooms |
| Mid-size 24 hour gym | 2 to 3 hours, every night | Change rooms, overnight work, weekend shifts |
| Large health club with pool or spa | Several cleaners daily, plus daytime touch-ups | Wet areas, pool facilities, spa areas and extra hygiene requirements |
Here’s how the arithmetic works for a mid-size gym. Two hours a night, five weeknights, at $55 an hour: 2 × 5 × 4.33 weeks × $55 comes to about $2,380 a month. Add weekend nights and the total goes up, because those shifts cost more to staff. This is an example of how a quote is built, not a price for your gym.

How to keep costs down without cutting corners
- Get members wiping down. Spray bottles and wipes at every station mean the cleaners can focus on deep cleaning, not the basics.
- Clean in your quietest window. Cleaners work faster in an empty gym, so you pay for fewer hours.
- Ask for a fixed monthly price. It’s easier to budget than an hourly rate, and it stops hours creeping up.
- Bundle the extras. Sanitary bins, windows and steam cleaning from one provider usually works out cheaper than three separate contractors.

Frequently asked questions
How much does gym cleaning cost in Sydney?
Most Sydney gyms are cleaned at commercial rates of around $46 to $70 an hour in 2026, including GST. The monthly cost depends on how many hours your gym needs per visit and how many visits a week.
Why does a 24 hour gym cost more to clean?
There’s no empty window, so cleaning happens overnight, and weekend and public holiday shifts carry higher award penalty rates. Busy 24 hour gyms also usually need cleaning every night.
How often should a gym be professionally cleaned?
Most gyms need a professional clean every night or most nights. Smaller, quieter studios may get by with three or four cleans a week, as long as members wipe down equipment between uses.
Is gym cleaning priced per hour or per month?
Either, but most ongoing gym contracts end up as a fixed monthly price. It’s easier to budget and stops hours creeping up.
Can gym cleaning happen while members are training?
Light touch-ups can, but deep cleaning of change rooms and floors is best done in your quietest window, when cleaners can work faster and members aren’t in the way.
